We have written a lot about Barb over the years. We have trapped more than 85 cats at at the 50th Street location where she feeds.
At this point, the property has been sold and a seven-story apartment building will eventually be built there. Meanwhile, there are still cats to trap and neuter.
Barb went into the large shed and heard kittens. She saw them, but mamma moved them before she could get to them.
It’s always exciting to scope out a job before making a plan. I use the word “plan” knowing how many times any plan is relevant. LOL. I walked in to the 4,000-square-foot shed, with its dirt floor and years of abandoned history, left for the final demolition. This was the second time for this job. The first time, I didn’t see any kittens, just the old animal skin where Barb had seen the kittens.
This time, there they were! Maybe three weeks old. I grabbed two and the third one disappeared behind an old piece of metal. With no hope, I stuck my hand behind the piece of metal, not knowing what I was going to feel. Yikes! My hand covered a kitten! I had the three kittens!
Unfortunately the mamma is very important when trapping. Kittens are only the result of our failure to catch mom.
While I was catching the kittens there was no sign of mamma, but I felt a big, black tomcat calmly watching from an old cushion across the way.
The next day I set traps in the shed and caught mom and pop!
