Karen’s mom started feeding cats in 2012. By 2013 there were 19 cats , a good portion of them being kittens. Karen trapped them 2-4 at a time starting in January 2014 through the end of March and took them to be spayed\neutered at Idaho Humane Society. Three of the 19 were ill so they were taken to All Pet Complex for treatment. She paid to have two of them spayed\neutered there instead of IHS. Karen kept four of them as pets. Sadly, the numbers have dwindled over the years. It’s such a hard life for them.
Now, she was down to four of the original cats. She was driving all the way from east Boise every day.
Her mother was now moving into a care facility and Karen wanted to transfer these cats to her home where they would be safe.
When Karen called GCCCP to tell us what she wanted to do it was obvious she needed someone to help her in this area.
We have cell cameras and traps to use. Karen did not hesitate to buy a 5’ by 10’ catio and another camera to help with the project. She set the catio up at her house.
We set the traps and tied them up with the cameras recording the cats' patterns and schedules. It took about a week, start to finish. One cat got to go directly into the catio, two went to IHS Dorman for some TLC, and one went to the Cat Dr for a wellness check. They all are now safe and sound at Karen’s house in their delux catio.
We trapped a darling kitty who was out late and seemed homeless. Knowing there wouldn’t be anymore food offered at this location, we decided to take him to Dorman and see if we could find any owner and if adoption was an option.
There used to be 19 cats but now there were only four. That is proof trap, neuter, return TNR works! Karen previously spayed\neutered every one of them so there were no new kittens; they just had to live out their lives.
Garden City Community Cats Project and Karen worked as a great team. Her determination and compassion are something GCCCP appreciates and we are glad we can work to help caregivers like Karen.
